You know what we did?
We went outside
Yeah we went outside to play! There was such thing as “play clothes”
Girls would jump rope…Double Dutch, hopscotch
The fellas would play Tag, Freeze tag; water gun/balloon fights…shoot basketball, play stick ball
Then we’d all get together play Red light/Green light, mother may I? Hide and Go get it
All types of ish
And be out all night (or till it was time to eat)
…then we’d go BACK out!
Even when we had toys…new toys; we’d bring them outside to play with them…the only time we weren’t outside was:
When we were eating, sleeping, bathing, or it was raining
(And when The Cosby Show was on)
THESE DAYS!?
Kids are wack…they don’t play; boring ass stupid kids…all they want to do is watch BET, play video games, and get on the net
…Shidddddd we’d get on the bikes and be GONE!
Hit up the store get some Penny Candy….or some juice
We had:
Lemonheads
Fun Dip
Gobstoppers
Now and Laters
Cherry Clans
Jolly Joes
Mike and Ikes
Laffy Taffy
Jolly Ranchers
Root beer Barrels
Bit O Honey
Jolly Rancher Sticks
…some of everything!
Shits was like a dime…fiddy cents for king size joints or whatever
Wack ass stores and manufactures….they dont even make the old school shit like they use to!
Now and Laters had like 1,000 flavors…now you got like 5…and they came in the clear white wax paper…and were bigger
How you gon SHRINK Now and Laters?
Remember Mamba? Them shits was like 40-50 cents and had like 100 pieces lol; first time I saw those I thought I’d better hurry up and buy them before they caught on and up the price
And The Quarter Waters? Grape Drink?! Capri Suns with the break your hand trying to get the straw in the side joint?
Shidddddddddddddd
Those were the days…only the rich kids had the Capri suns for a while though…we had the Quarter water joints
Yo! Remember the big ass Yellow McDonalds Drum of Orange Drink?
Man Happy meals were like $2 and were like fly ass coloring joints and puzzles…shits were spaceships
I dunno what’s going on now…I know one thing there’s a lot of fat ass kids
I mean we had the fast food but it was really only McDonalds and Burger King…Wendy’s popped up but that was it
..And it was a special occasion you got that shit so you were happy…that’s why it was a happy meal LOL
AND cuz mothers use to cook! Like every day!
Pizza was special…that’s why in school and shit a Pizza Party or Pizza day in lunch was like Christmas
…now you got Pizza Hut IN School; we had those Rectangular foil packed joints
It didnt take much to entertain ourselves
Shiddddd girls would stand outside for hours slapping their hands together playing “slide” or house/school
Some real shit…learning
Can’t play house these days….the fellas wouldn’t get to participate (get it?)
Oh and the girls would be too busy playing with their real life babies (wrong true…but am I lying?)
We had Atari
Games that everyone could play…Moms use to try and get with me on Centipede and Space invaders
I owned her in Ms Pac Man…Even to this day if you want to have a lot of people over and play games it’s the old joints like that; that everyone would get into
Even the first Nintendo…Fellas would get together to this day and get some Tecmo on over Madden
And what woman doesnt like Mario 3?
But even with those games…still went outside; not you got video games you take outside with you
(The PSP…cuz face it the game boy was for lames)
TV was Damn for sure different…we had:
Sesame Street
The electric Company
School House Rock
Mr. Rogers
Mr. Wizard
3-2-1 Contact
The Letter People
The after school specials LOL
Man I learned more about life watching the old Bugs Bunny Cartoons than in some grade school classes
(Cuz you know those shows weren’t for kids…those cartoons were for adults, that’s why they use to show them in the theater)
I remember looking at the end of the shows after I learned roman numerals…those shits were made in like the 50′s
We had reruns of reruns and were still funny as hell…and educational
Shows were different…had messages…it was cool to watch “White shows”
Growing Pains and Family Ties were that stuff lol
And lets not get started on Saturday Mornings
Remember you’ get up and lay your blanket down in the living room (cuz what kid had a TV in their room…even Ricky from Silver spoons didnt have that)
Lay down in the living room in front of the TV…all dumb early…bowl of cereal
And watch cartoons from like 7-8am till noon (cuz some bull came on at noon)…didn’t matter you’d be going outside anyway.
But everyone had their lineup…what channels and show to watch
You know what the bugged out thing was? No one really talked about the cartoons like later that day…it was just for our on entertainment
…Shows like:
Fat Albert
Jackson Five
The Super friends
Dragon’s Lair
Shirt Tales
Get along Gang
Dungeons and Dragons
Smurfs
Jem
Alvin and the Chipmunks
Mr. T
Spiderman and his Amazing Friends
The USA Cartoon Network!
(shit like the Snorks, Flintstone Kids, Fraggle Rock, Punky Brewster, Wuzzles, etc)
Remember all the video games had their own cartoon? Wrestling had one….
What comes on Saturday mornings now?
Shiddd at least we had Teen Summit (Hi Ananda mmmmmmmm)
Remember gay ass Prince Dejour?
After School we had Cartoons…TV was great…even the commercials (maybe I’ll do another blog about those)

First one to comment, that’s odd. The weirdest thing I remember about Saturday mornings is when they started getting weak. That and Kidd Video. And Spidey and the Thing, Hulk, Starcade, Scooby before Scrappy’s ass came along, and pretty much every video game related cartoon no matter how stupid they were. Eff it, I love cartoons.
And why can’t I find any Jungle Juice anymore?

even though i did have a tv in my room, i STILL took my blanket and laid in front of the tv in the living room. Those were the days, there was no 1,000 channels on cable all we had was WHT and my mom had the key to turn it on! i really miss those days. things were wholesome, our kids are doomed.
and YESSSSSS about the McDonalds being a treat! I only use to get in once in a while and it wud be on the weekends. lol i used to get so excited walking to McDonalds and didnt the cheese burgers taste waaaay better?
Chinese food was like a delicacy, it was even exciting for us to go food shopping. Ya’ll remember the No Frills frosted and corn flakes? what is a no frills? what does that mean?

How you gon SHRINK Now and Laters?
-LMAO! I just had some apple and watermelon now or laters this past weekend, and I noticed the change in size.
Capri Suns with the break your hand trying to get the straw in the side joint?
-I would always bend my straw and put a hole in it. Lol…I also would freeze them, cut open the top, and eat it with a spoon.
Quarter water joints
-Never heard of this…and I was certainly not a “rich kid”
I dunno what’s going on now…I know one thing there’s a lot of fat ass kids
-That’s because they don’t go outside and play…we used to run our happy meals off…actually I never had a happy meal, I always ate from the “grown folks” menu. I wanted a large fry, lol, I could care less about the toy.
And what woman doesn’t like Mario 3?
*raises hand*
Awww, those were the days…

Loves your blog….
Man this was a wonderful trip back into time. I was amening everything you said. These kids today don’t know what being a kid is. We had us some good times using our imagination.
Here’s a site that you might enjoy to go back into time. http://www.retrojunk.com/ There are snippets of commercials, theme songs and some episodes. Have fun.

Awe..yeah the good days…

April 11, 2007
Hahaha… Prince Dajour was so weird, he had that pencil thin mustache and brushed his hair straight back.
I had the Shana doll…you know the black girl with the purple afro, they were SO much bigger than barbies. Had to buy all new clothes.
Did you like Alexander that grapes and boston baked beans?
eclectik
April 11, 2007
I love you guys
Sometimes I think I’m alone with the memories…damn those were the days
How we allow kids to go through what they’re going through now?
If The Board have a meet and greet we need to have a 80′s night lol
I did too love boston baked beans and Alexander the Grapes!
Always.Funky.Fresh
April 11, 2007
WOW. I was back in the 80′s for a second.
Kids these days say they’re bored. We were never bored. We’d make up games that made no damn sense but kept us entertained. Gimme a blue Spalding ball and a wall and it’s on!
Where’s Bazooka gum on the list? 1 cent, 5 cent and you get a comic strip!
All I gotta say is…3-2-1…Contact, it’s the secret, it’s the moment, when everything happens!!!

I’m not going to comment on any of that stuff because I’m currently pretending to be too young to remember all of that. : )
Penny candy? Hmmm…interesting concept. LOL

Man, I remember begging for money for Word Up! so I could tape up the posters on my walls. My Popps would be pissed because it was always a fresh coat of paint!
Man, remember the Prince posters with the eyes and just lips and shit!
Man, I would kiss Bobby Brown on my poster everynight. That was back in the day.
How life changes? Yeah, I wanted to Mrs. Bobby Brown. I didn’t know anything about child support, baby Momma’s didn’t exist, and for sho there was no internet.
Won’t trade it or go back. Now, I can stay up late, have a beer, get into all the clubs, drive my own car with the music loud, buy my own shoes, and drink chocolate milk anytime I wanna! Being grown is good.
I am glad I had that childhood….I had a good life….and having a good life!
prissy
April 12, 2007
No you didn’t take it back to the Cherry Clans! *lol* Those were the ish….can’t find them anywhere these days, just the bootlegged cherry flavor lemonheads ;-(
…now you got Pizza Hut IN School; we had those Rectangular foil packed joints
I loved the pizza in elementary…threw some ranch dressing on it and……BAM!
Shiddddd girls would stand outside for hours slapping their hands together playing “slide” or house/school
Ahhh No you didn’t! What you know about ‘LIttle Sallie Walker’ walking down the street…
(The PSP…cuz face it the game boy was for lames)
*gasp* I’m offended…I have a gameboy advanced…Love playing SuperMario on it…
Mr. Rogers rocks! I used to wish I go get on that trolley and go to the land of make believe *lol*

April 12, 2007
Wow. Nicely written. Stuff was better back then. Whenever you look back, stuff going on nowadays just doesn’t compare. Saturday mornings were what I lived for. And I’d get McD’s whenever I was good in church…and thetoys were AWESOME!

I know I’m late but let get to commentin…First let me say you hit everything on the nail head!
You know what we did?
We went outside
~Fukin right! Loved every minute of it too!
And be out all night (or till it was time to eat)
…then we’d go BACK out!
~Damn right we did!
Kids are wack…they don’t play; boring ass stupid kids…all they want to do is watch BET, play video games, and get on the net
…Shidddddd we’d get on the bikes and be GONE!
Hit up the store get some Penny Candy….or some juice
~Preach On!
Those were the days…only the rich kids had the Capri suns for a while though…we had the Quarter water joints
~I resent that. We weren’t rich. We were comfortable.
I dunno what’s going on now…I know one thing there’s a lot of fat ass kids
~Sure do and I’m mad at these damn mamas that want to sue McDonald’s for their kids being fat! Say no some damn time!
Man I learned more about life watching the old Bugs Bunny Cartoons than in some grade school classes
~That’s so real right there. Hate Disney. Didn’t learn shid!
Remember you’ get up and lay your blanket down in the living room (cuz what kid had a TV in their room…even Ricky from Silver spoons didn’t have that)
Lay down in the living room in front of the TV…all dumb early…bowl of cereal
And watch cartoons from like 7-8am till noon (cuz some bull came on at noon)…didn’t matter you’d be going outside anyway.
~Man those was the days! I still do this sometimes.
This is the day of Technology and crap because these sorry azzzz kids don’t want to get off they butts and go have fun. They don’t even use their brain to invent games like we did. Didn’t matter what we had around us, we’d invent stuff to play when we were outside. Awww times have truly changed.

Pleasebelieve, WHENEVER I see Lemonheads (or Appleheads), I’m snatchin’ them up quick! Those luxuries are hard to come by these days!

You have me over here reminiscing! Happy Meals were the greatest things on Earth when I was little! Now that I’m grown, I’m like “What the hell was it about McDonalds that had me going crazy when I was little?!”
You’re right though. Kids don’t play outside nearly as much as they used to.

OMG, I just found your blog and what a way to become a fan…I remember all of that, but as a child of the 70′s (I’m dating myself here). At 40, I say the same thing, how is it possible that in just a 30 year span, I have seen kids who play everything go to children who have absolutely no knowlege of HOW TO PLAY? It’s mind boggling.
Oh, but I must tell you, if you talking about the Jackson Five cartoon (which ironically Edumnd Sylvers was the voice of Jermanine, go figure); I can go as far as when the cartoon debuted in ’71/’72 fall season. Along with the Osmonds cartoon. I have to admit, I was a Donnie and Marie fan and watched their show every weekend…

This is one of my favs…. takes me back to childhood. MAN…. those were the days!!!
LOL @ There was such thing as “play clothes”
Man, what??? My moma still dares my lil brother to go outside in his ‘School Clothes and shoes”, HA… so, yes, he has “Play Clothes”.
Dude, around my way, Jolly Ranchers used to cost a penny!! Can’t get them that cheap any more.

September 15, 2007
My, how quickly time flies. Some of these things stand out like just yesterday.
In the summertime there was nothing to do but go outside. My sister used to hog the TV. We’d make tree swings in the backyard. I used to play with the cats for hours, I’d make them chase a bone on a string
Yeah, McDonald’s was a treat. Even my Mom got excited over a Big Mac. These kids today eat fast food every day and wonder why their babies come out barking like dogs or completely covered in fur. For real!! Talk to hospital staff about the things they see. My mom was one of those who cooked every day. I’m so grateful that I grew up on that

you’re on point with a lot of stuff you said. I miss my childhood, and it was a lot like that. It was so much fun. I would give anything to go back to it for a day. I remember Saturday mornings being like that. I used to get cereal, and sometimes get a spoon and put it in the sugar jar and just eat some sugar. I still don’t know why I did that to this day, but I don’t do it anymore. The cartoons were fun, but they don’t make them like they used to.

September 16, 2007
Don’t forget though…the cereal game on Saturdays had to be on point…
Pops
Captain Crunch
Honey Smacks
Frosted Flakes
Cocoa Krispies
Trix
Fruity Pebbles…et cetera…..
now it’s all the low carb ish…my niece won’t touch anything with corn in it
***sighs*** the good old days….

Wow…talk about takin me back…I remember the candies – my fave were those Boston Baked Beans – little peanuts covered in this red candy shell. Now those were the stuff! Playin outside till the street lights came on, that’s when you knew it was time to go into the house (or when your moms would scream for you to get inside)…Saturday morning cartoons: Heckel and Jeckel, those two black crows – I loved that one, but nothing beats the Saturday kung-fu/karate movies, good times…and lastly, I believe that I am one of the last of a dying breed – I cook, almost everyday. Old school, I know, but there is nothing like a home-cooked meal, =)

I just recently found this blog and this is my first time posting a comment; but I must say wow that was a trip down memory lane. I practicaly remember everything listed. Just thinking about the way things have changed today, so sad. What will the kids of today have to reflect on tommorrow?

E! What a way to make me feel old!!!
Atari, was and is one of the best game systems ever!! I still have mine and my kids laughed when I first pulled it out the box!
My kids still have to grab a blanket and lay on the floor to watch TV and we don’t watch BET/MTV or VH1 in my home.
My son will pass on the x.box360 to play outside. Yes, he has to put on his play clothes/shoes first then he grabs these things…his bike, his football and his skateboard. I don’t know how he does it all, but he comes back to eat and guess what ? He’s gone again!!
Now my daughter and her girls are a different story. They are focused on the newest dance craze, cell phones, myspace, digital cameras and boys. I remember when I was growing up all me and my girls thought about was going outside so we could pretend we were EnVouge, SWV and TLC. Those were the days! You couldn’t tell us we couldn’t sing with the best of ‘em. Eh, its totally a different world.

We went outside…so damn true. Going outside was the thing to do, back then. Hell, we’d put tire rims on the bikes that didn’t even fit just to ride. Remember the tennis balls stuck in the spokes?
Now & Laters, Jolly Joes and Mike & Ikes.
How are they going to shrink now & laters. ROFL!
Can’t play house these days….the fellas wouldn’t get to participate (get it?)
Oh and the girls would be too busy playing with their real life babies (wrong true…but am I lying?)
*standing ovation*
Me and female friend were just talking about Saturday morning cartoons and eating cereal. Remember when, after eating all the cereal, we’d turn the bowl up, and drink the milk.
Remember listening to the TOP 40 music countdown on Saturday afternoons? Remember the first time you ever went to a college football game. I felt like a big boy. Oh yeah do you rememeber the first time you bought your very own big bag of doritos? Damn. Those were the days.
Remember when Michael Jordan had no championships. Remember when we couldn’t wait until a grown up took us school shopping? Remember hating to fix your mom a cup of coffee?
Let me stop.

Man those were the days. Life was so carefree. I get on my kids all the time for not wanting to go outside and hang out in the summer. Lazy Butts!
Man and Lemon heads were my joint and still are. I have a box in my nightstand and was eating some today. And you forgot to mention alexander the grape. I used to get those, lemon heads and cherry clan and mix them together. Lol
