    The Breakthrough

    By eclectik | August 23, 2008

“Greatest of All Time, and that’s all real

Ain’t no rapper could do what I do
Rip ya whole label solo, no crew

    Ain’t a MC that I can’t go throught
And I only have respect for a chosen few

But they could get it too”

I LOVE this type of convo! THESE are the readers and comments I want/look forward to
    …where the hell yall been!?!?

I fux with all the comments made, whether they are personal or not

The reason behind LL Cool J being ranked so high or in the Top 10 is based off the earlier work
If I judged people by what they are doing now it would look REAL different:

KRS one (My personal fav rapper of all time) <--if the list woulda been biased he'd be #1 his last releases were wack to me
Rakim's The Master was yuck...I hardly liked Dont sweat the Technique
Nothing Jay-Z made since Blueprint really moves me
Lets not talk about Nastrudamas and Gods son

...Basically most should've stopped after the third Album LOL

So with all that being said...Radio, Bigger and Deffer, Waling with a Panther, and Mama Said Knock you out...along with the Killing of rappers trying to battle him
And the two's and fews of hot singles he's made since then
AND the fact that he is still kinda revelant puts him in my "All time" list...not the right now list
Dominque Wilkins sucked ass his like last 5 years in the league...but he's still one of the greatest ever to me
    ...so go fig.

Plus a lot of people think LL now and think : Headrush or all that commercial sing songy R&B feature bull
Jack the Ripper, Till the Break of Dawn, The Breakthrough, The I shot ya, and 4,3,2,1 LL is what Im talkin about...again All time, not the best of the '00's

You have to listen to what these guys were saying and at the time they were saying it…95% of the lyrics and sentiment can still rock with or murk everyone doin it now

ALSO: This Top 5 list is NOT My top 5 Favorite of all time…that’s different
And I’m sure my Top 5 Still recording is nothing like anyone elses either

To me being better or the best in the game today is NO WHERE NEAR being the best in the game back then
The comeptiton and the standards were WAY higher back when Rakim and KRS and LL Started

…also understand that Top 5 Greatest Hip Hop Artists of all time is WAY different than Top 5 Greatest Lyricist of all time
Or Top 5 Most influential rappers of all time….When I go Top 5 overall…it’s overall

I dont think anyone else can stand up to:

    My Melody
    BAD
    Criminal Minded
    It Aint hard to tell
    Politics as Usual

Yes indeed it’s Subjective and thats why I typed my Criteria at the top…Im not one that just spouts out stuff without backing it up
And everyone has opinions so that’s why this type of convo is so dope

I just cannot put Pac or Big in the top 5…MAYBE BIG in the top 10 but I’m not sure

Andre 3000? I think I just cant get with it…I’ll never say he’s wack…I just think there’s a lot better
Like: black Thought, Mos Def, Common, Ghostface, I even think Kanye is better or rather more entertaining with the lyrics/word play…but I dunno <--none of them are in my top 10 anyway.

I live, eat, drink, sleep, shit Hip Hop LOL I  know Hip Hop...I'm 1981 to 2000 most ish after that? feh.

NOW as far as my Top 10?

I can defintely do that….I can just do the list or I can break it down like the Top 5
If you want Femcees I got that too
    Albums? Yep

To be totally honest I have someone that –>I<-- feel should be top 5 that NO one would agree with...so I put him at #6 just to keep the peace and the flames down lol

What yall NEED to do is gitcho stankin asses over to http://eclectik-discussion.com and debate with me real time in the Stereo/Hip Hop Forum

“I’m a hitman, but I’m not for hire
Fly girl’s desire, the man you admire

Not only on the stage, I rock in the park
and I’m a killer in the daytime, and worse after dark

So don’t never ever mess with the king of the sound
L.L. Cool J, the baddest around.”

    LOL

People put LL down but he deserves the props.
He has been around since forever and he was a hit maker.

      Rock the bells.

      Ladies Love Cool James.

LOL you got me thinking about when I was younger and had to have his tape. Tape? Dag, I’m old.

      -Lovinlife, I agree 100%!
-LL used to be dope… used to be.
-I mos definately agree about the Rakim and KRS comments.

There are so many categories that this can be broken doen to that it just gets crazy! lol

      My $.08, part II. Lol

      Understood. But um…
Are you serious about Kanye>Dre? Like huh?? Kanye’s not on anyone’s lyrical content list. That was a low blow man. I can get with every other statement, including and especially “I just can’t get with it” but that was WAY below the belt. Rakim, KRS, Nas and Kanye in the same conversation is damn illegal. Kanye’s hot because of hot beats, ghost writers and production. Dre is hot because of lyrics.

Black thought (a sh!tload of albums), Com (a decent number of albums), Ghost and Mos are all extremely talented. No discussion needed. But re: Mos Def, I think he needs to thicken up that discography a bit. Dre’s been doing it since 93 averaging a new album every other year! That’s more than a one-hot-album-every-10-year average.

I’m the Captain of Team 3 Stacks! He’s in my top 10 lyricists of all time and definitely top 5 or 6 still rhyming. No question.

I’ll put money on this: if 3000 was from NY I wouldn’t need to defend him…or Bun B.
I like this E! Got my blood pumpin’!

      *going to discussions*

LOL Coop da Loop! I feel you

I DID NOT say Kanye was in the same convo as those others, I just said I ENJOY him better than 3000…not nec. being ‘better’ I enjoy him
BUT witht hat said I though Kanye’s Last two CDs was wack too…I only liked College drop out and all the freestyles

I dunno bout people ghostwritting freestyles…but it’s whatever

Like I said NONE of them are in MY top 10 or what I think The real Top 10 of all tme are (based on my criteria)

YES! see you on the board!

    7. 12kyle Says:

I love Kanye but he’s not even in the top 25.

I think Dre3staks is severely underrated. So is Black Thought, Talib Kweli, Common, and Mos Def

I still can’t put Uncle L in the top 5. Mr Pink Cookies in a Plastic Bag??? Nothing relevant since Mama Said Knock You Out.

What about Ice Cube and Scarface in the top 10???

    8. Tittayballs Says:

((Kanye better than Andre 3000 = Blasphemy. smh))

((I still can’t put Uncle L in the top 5. Mr Pink Cookies in a Plastic Bag??))

      *Flatlines ____*

      lmaooo! I feel you!
That actually hurt my feelings that 3 Stacks wasn’t given the credit he deserves.

My Top 10 would definitely have Big L in there reguardless of Albums. He died so he couldn’t relese all those albums like other kats. But just know that if he didn’t get killed, Jay wouldn’t be half of what he is today. He used to son Jay on a consistant basis lyrically.

((I’ll put money on this: if 3000 was from NY I wouldn’t need to defend him))

This statement SO true! People are quick to dick ride (Oh, did I say that? Yeah, I did) MC’s from NY just because. Its a shame that talented MC’s get overlooked due where they reside or lack of TV time.

Come up to NY and have this same conversation and people who apreciate real lyricists will give props to the Scarfaces, The Commons, The Mos’, the Thoughts, etc…

    9. eclectik Says:
      August 24th, 2008 at 4:45 pm

But NOT in the TOP 10

      Props is one thing…

People kill me witht he “East coast bias”

JUST because the southern Rappers are NOT mentioned in the ‘Greatest of all time onvos” does not mena they are disrespected…or wack or whatever…they just might not be considered THE BEST

Kobe Bryant is that man on the court…is he one of the Top 5 of all time?

      HELLLLLLLL NO

    10. Tittayballs Says:
      August 24th, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Props is the same thing as credit (Google it) and it’s due when mentioning talented artists. There are several artists that could easily fall into the ranks of Greatest by the standards you posted.

I admidt that I’m somewhat biased because I’m from the East Coast. If we have this same convo with someone from Cali, I guarantee you they would have Snoop, Dr. Dre, or other West Coast artists as their Top Pics. That’s what they like, what they’re used to hearing, and what they apreciate. But you can’t take away that these are some talented artists. Artists that, even at a time whem music is full of bubblegum and snap dancing, they come with lyrics that are knowledgable, quick witted, and only come with years of experience. The same talent that is overlooked and underrated.

…Just admidt it… your somewhat biased.

I guess I need to see this Top 10 list first, but I’m gonna go out on a limb and ask: How many artists from other geographical areas are on it?

And its neither here nor there but:
Kobe is talented, nobody can take that from him, but he’s still a snitching sellout in my book. He’s the one that has to wake up everyday with a woman that we all know is just with him for the money. I know that can’t play to good on his conscience. And I’m glad they lost to show him you need a team to win; you can’t do everything by yourself. Even Jordan had his teamates.

Top 10 of all time, current, and lyrically.

    12. eclectik Says:
      August 24th, 2008 at 8:30 pm

I will not make a Top 10 in the US…i dont care where they are from…Fuk if you want to Tupac is from Brooklyn

Who cares where they are from, I only care about the lyrics and the talent.

I can do without the beats and production.

No biased, just the criteria that I posted.

Separate favorites from best…its tough to do but it’s possible.

damn, E… i see you hit the right spot. HIP HOP (dead or alive) still incites lots of discussion and fiery passion. Im’a leave LL in my top 25 based on his DESTROYING Canibus…the amn can battle his ass off.. ill give him that

    14. Tittayballs Says:
      August 25th, 2008 at 4:57 am

Well, I would love to see who makes the Top 10 in the US. Will it Be Top 10 Dead and alive or just alive? If you can do without the beats and production I don’t see how Kanye was even mentioned. That’s pretty much his basis.

Separating the favs from lyrical assisins is easy.

And Tupac is actually from Upper Manhattan, East Harlem to be exact… not Brooklyn

      3. Clifton Harris
      4. Kanye tudah
      5. Luda/Jezzy

Note: Not counting Jigga Man cause he is inducted into Hall of Fame. Just my ranking on the fellas still in the league.
